The Lighthouse

You see further than the people around you, and you say what you see. Years before it was obvious, you knew the company was failing, the marriage was ending, the plan would not hold. You have been told you were too blunt, too cold, too much — usually by people who later discovered you were correct.

People love you for the fact that you will not perform comfort. In a landscape of reassurance, you are the one who tells the truth, and those who can bear it come to you precisely for that, sometimes at enormous personal cost to themselves.

The price is a particular loneliness, and the armour you built after it. You learned early that clarity is punished, so you stopped offering it warmly — you deliver it from a height, already braced for the reaction, and the height becomes the problem. People experience distance and read it as judgement, so they stop coming close, which confirms what you already believed. Your isolation is not evidence that you are unlovable. It is an old defence, running long after the people who taught it to you have gone.
